Honors & Awards Nominations

Each year, the Air & Waste Management Association recognizes individuals and companies for outstanding accomplishments in the promotion of a clean environment through the Honors & Awards Program.  These awards were created by the Association to encourage environmental professionals to serve as models for others to emulate and, in doing so, further the mission and objectives of the Association.

Information on these awards can be found on the A&WMA web site (www.awma.org).  The deadline to submit nominations for most of the awards is November 1, 2002.  For the remaining awards, the deadline is December 15, 2002.  The following awards are available:

·        The Frank A. Chambers Award is given for outstanding achievement in the science and art of air pollution control.  It requires accomplishment of a technical nature on the part of the recipient that is considered to be a major contribution to the science and art of air pollution control, the merit of which has been widely recognized by persons in the field.

·        The Richard Beatty Mellon Award is given to an individual whose contributions of a civic nature–whether administrative, legislative, or judicial–have aided substantially in pollution abatement in some field related to the mission and objectives of the Association.  To be eligible for the award, individuals must have made a sincere, constant, and unselfish effort over a period of time and in a manner best suited to his/her own resources, to develop or increase interest in, or acceptance of, the cause of air pollution control and waste management for the betterment of the environment.  The award is not limited to any specific area of endeavor.

Smith Griswold Award is given for outstanding accomplishment in the prevention and control of air pollution.  The recipient shall be a governmental staff member (past or present) whose contribution to the prevention and control of air pollution has been widely recognized by persons in the field.  The coverage is broad, since it is intended to recognize achievement in the many types of activities conducted by governmental prevention and control programs.

·        The Lyman A. Ripperton Award is given for distinguished achievement as an educator in some field of air pollution control.  It is awarded to an individual, who by precept and example has inspired students to achieve excellence in all their professional and social endeavors.  It recognizes the abilities that only a few in the education profession possess – to be able to teach with rigor, humor, humility, and pride.  The recipients of this award are representative of the educators we would have chosen if we had a choice.  They are known by the accomplishments of their students.

·        The Waste Management Award is given for:

·        Outstanding achievements in the science and art of waste management.  The accomplishment on the part of the recipient is technological in nature and widely recognized by persons in the field; OR

·        Outstanding achievement in the management, prevention and regulation of wastes.  The recipient may be an employee in government, industry, education or research, whose accomplishments have led to minimizing the impact of waste in the environment; OR

UPCOMING EVENTS

December 2002 meeting will be held on December 17, 2002 at the University Club in Clayton.  The meeting will feature Joe Petrovich, Channel 4 (KMOV) Meteorologist, and a $10 lunch.  Come and enjoy an interesting discussion on the weather in St. Louis and how it impacts air quality.  I’m sure Joe will give us a lively discussion that will be entertaining and useful.

The GSHMM group is interested in a joint meeting on Stormwater Phase II.  This will probably be in February to April timeframe.

Webcasts

As many of you know, A&WMA has begun an effort to organize and sponsor audio + web conferences.  On April 8, the first conference was launched, which featured President Bush’s  “Clear Skies Initiative.“ Other conferences have been on MACT Updates on Industrial Boilers, Internal Combustion Engines, and Industrial Turbines, and Surface Coatings.  These conferences have been successful in achieving their goals for the Association, while incurring minimal staff time and direct costs.  The fees for these conferences have ranged from $200 to $300 depending upon the topic, expected audience, and member/non-member/partner status of the registrant.  The registration fee for the conference is a site fee, meaning that each site receives one audio and one Internet connection for that fee and is permitted to have as many people as is practical participating using the one connection.  The intent behind the pricing policy was to enable a company or organization to register one or more sites for the convenience of their employees.  From time to time the St. Louis Section will host these conferences to allow a wider participation of members and companies.  Individuals can participate on a per head basis, which may lower the cost to around $20.

Please let us know if you would like to provide a location for these events, or would like to participate.  Most of the conferences occur on rather short notice and it would help to know what companies have facilities to hold such an event.  You may send a note to any board member or to webmaster@awmastl.org.

Membership Dues

Local members should be receiving your annual invoice soon. The invoice represents the annual local membership fee of $15 and the charge for any luncheon you RSVP'ed for, but did not attend. If you are an international member and do not have any outstanding luncheon dues you should not receive an invoice. Your local dues are paid through your international membership. Please pay your invoice promptly.

FROM THE CHAIR

As a new A&WMA year begins again, I want each of you to ask yourselves a question: “What do I expect/need from my relationship with the Air & Waste Management Association?”  Maybe you enjoy the opportunity to network with other environmental professionals in the St. Louis area.  Maybe you can’t live without the scintillating lunchtime topics that are provided on a monthly basis.  Maybe you relish the leadership opportunities available within the Section.  Perhaps you can’t put down the ever-engaging EM Magazine.  Whatever it is, I want to know.

“Why do you want to know?” you may also ask.  My response to you is that we need involved individuals to assist us in meeting our goals.  We need to know what you want to know.  If you just cannot live without hearing about updates to the SPCC regulations, then I want to know so we can plan for a speaker on the topic.  If you see an area where you will be able to volunteer your abilities, be it speaking, organizing, schmoozing, etc. let me know.

Some of our goals for the year are conducting teacher-training programs, sponsoring a reduced cost meeting to “reward” members and initiating chapters at local universities.  We are also investigating ways to bring A&WMA webcasts on pertinent topics to the local Section at reduced cost.  If you would be willing to help in any of these endeavors, please let me know.

One other note: the web page address for the Section has changed.  Our new address is www.awmastl.org.  You will still be able to access the web page using the old name, if you prefer that method.  Anyone who isn’t on our mailing list can also sign up on the site.

In closing, I’d just like to say that we should be able to have fun while continuing to provide quality services to the membership.  I think we have a great year going.  We’ve already heard about the Clear Skies Initiative and the latest in particulate air monitoring in the St. Louis area.  A panel on ISO 14000 is planned for November and we have a local celebrity, meteorologist Joe Petrovich, coming to speak with us in December.  I’m excited about what’s coming up and I hope you are too.

Thanks,

Jennifer Markwardt
