FROM THE CHAIR

Since this is my last “Message from the Chair” column, I’d like to take the time to thank everyone who has worked so hard this year to make the Greater St. Louis Section of the Air & Waste Management Association successful.

First, I’d like to thank the Board of Directors – Tom Blackwood, Jim Burris, Mike Duvall, John Gibbons, Dominic Grana, Les Harmon, Tom Maddox, Susan Myers, Bill Roth-Evans and Shyam Srinivas.  Everyone has worked very hard this year to make sure we have good programs for the membership and to assist the community in understanding environmental issues.  A ballot for 2003-2004 is attached to this newsletter.  Please take time to vote for your officers and board members for next year (you can do this electronically or mail your vote in).

Second, I’d like to thank all our speakers from the last year.  I think we presented a wide range of topics that interested our membership.  We had one of our best turnouts ever for the SPCC rule change presentation we had in January.

Third, I’d like to thank all our volunteers and sponsors.  Without your help, we wouldn’t be able to offer cheaper meetings or Science Fair Awards or any of the other programs we contribute to throughout the year.

Fourth, I’d like to thank the membership.  Everything we as a board do is to assist you in your profession and we wouldn’t do anything if we didn’t have an audience.  Please continue to provide feedback on our programs and priorities so we can better serve you.

Also, I’d like to encourage everyone to attend our last two meetings of the year – April 22 at Washington University (Corporate Governance) and May 13 at the Zoo (Stormwater Phase II).  The topics are interesting and it’s always a good opportunity to network with your peers.  We are currently planning a golf outing for a Friday afternoon in June.  Several years ago, we stopped holding this event, but the BOD received a request (and a volunteer) to reinstate it this year.  Hopefully, we can get some generous sponsors, encourage a good turnout and have a lot of fun.  I hope to see you there.

Thanks to everyone for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Chair.  I have truly enjoyed the job and I have enjoyed working with each of you.  I will continue to serve as Past Chair next year and I hope we’ll have the same (or higher) level of participation and effort that we had this year.

Thanks again,

Jennifer Markwardt

Previous Meeting Summaries

January Meeting

On January 21, we met at the Sheraton in Clayton to get the scoop on the new SPCC regulations.  We had the largest turnout of the year (approximately 75 people).  Greg Gorman, an engineer with Burns & McDonnell, and Morris Kline, a sales manager for HMT Inspection, outlined the regulations; pointed out sticking points and areas of ambiguity; and explained some acceptable ways of integrity testing existing tanks.

February Meeting

Dale Guariglia, a partner at Bryan Cave, LLP, delivered an interesting presentation regarding noncompliance responses and actions at Windows Off Washington on February 18.  The practical advice he gave will hopefully not be needed by the members in attendance, but it’s good to know how to react when negative situations arise.  Windows Off Washington offered a great view, great food, great ambience and great service.

March Meeting

The March meeting took place at the Bissell Point Wastewater Treatment Plant in north St. Louis on March 18.  Ed Cope, Operations Division Manager, and Dave Plumb, an operator at the plant, presented information on the plant and then conducted a tour of the entire facility in the drizzle.  We even got to see the tunnels running underneath the plant.  We enjoyed a meal from KC Masterpiece following the tour.

Thanks to all of the speakers and tour guides.  We had an outstanding variety and look forward to future programs.  If you have a speaker or topic in mind, let us know.

We would also like to give a big THANK YOU to the sponsors of our January meeting, Environmetrics, Inc. Their support is a clear example of their continued dedication and commitment to furthering the environmental profession in St. Louis.

Future Events

Missouri Waste Control Coalition Conference (reminder)

The Missouri Waste Control Coalition is a statewide organization that has been active since 1982. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All points of view regarding waste management are invited and discussed within the Coalition. The structure of the Board encourages the presentation of diverse opinions and perspectives to increase knowledge and understanding. Officers and directors include representatives from business and industry, government agencies, and citizens groups.

Each year in the summer the Coalition sponsors the Missouri Waste Management Conference. It also develops policy recommendations, cosponsors local conferences, offers educational scholarships and teacher mini-grants, presents awards for outstanding achievement in waste management, and publishes a newsletter for Coalition members.

From 1972-1981, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources sponsored an annual "Missouri Solid Waste Conference" in Jefferson City. The purpose of the conference was to bring together citizens, government, business and industry to discuss the rapidly changing field of waste management. From these early conferences grew the Missouri Waste Control Coalition, formed in 1981 through the efforts of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the University of Missouri-Columbia, and the Associated Industries of Missouri.

The 2003 Missouri Waste Control Coalition Conference will be at the Lodge of Four Seasons in the Lake of the Ozarks, June 29 to July 1, 2003.  Please mark your calendars!
