Green Design is a recent variation of many issues important to designers, engineers, managers, manufacturers, and scientists. In the design process, issues such as the intended resource use impacts, the efficiency of a system, or the design for a building are sometimes explicit, but sometimes they are not. Life-Cycle Cost, Life-Cycle Analysis, Cradle to Grave or Cradle to Cradle thinking are only beginning to occur in the industry. These tools follow the intended use or consequential implications for the building occupants, users, and building managers, which become the next set of issues or circumstances in the life of a building.

These issues will be examined in the context of facility design, impacts, and management. We will also discuss the recent history of these issues, as well as the professionals, vendors, and organizations addressing them. In particular, we will discuss the US Green Building Council and its programs, including its "Green Building Rating System: 'LEED' (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)." We will conclude with an introduction to the local St. Louis Regional Green Building Council, hosted by the Gateway Center for Resource Efficiency (a Division of the Missouri Botanical Garden).

Whether it’s air or water quality, waste disposal or building construction, most projects have some type of permitting process. As environmental professionals, we negotiate permit terms and conditions to meet regulatory requirements, protect human health and the environment and meet the project’s goals. We use techniques to resolve environmental disputes between the regulatory agencies, the public, and our company. During the permit process, which negotiating tips and techniques work to satisfy everyone’s concerns?

Featuring local environmental experts, join us this month in an active panel discussion on permit negotiations. Our panelists will provide some strategies of their own while addressing typical environmental disputes. Please bring one strategy to share with the panelists and others. Learn practical tips and techniques in negotiation that you can put to use immediately.
